Fried Chicken and Steaks Top Diverse Menu

Blinkers Tavern is known for its fried chicken and steaks, but partner Gary Ginn and chef Jon Spencer say the menu, diversified with fresh seafood, burgers, ribs, pastas and sandwiches, is extensive enough to please anyone.

Blinkers has been providing a casual place to eat delicious food since St. Patrick’s Day of 2011, when Ginn and Sandy Meyer opened the horse-themed restaurant in Covington.

The atmosphere is casual and welcoming, with plenty of beers and wines, mouth-watering eats, and smiling faces.

“You want everyone to feel more like a friend than a customer. You want to treat them like they just came into your house,” says Ginn.

While hospitality is Ginn’s focus, the food is clearly Spencer’s. “I try to make everything as good as I can because if you specialize in one thing, then you’re letting something else go.

“We want to make sure we are putting the right amount of attention into everything,” says Spencer.

Appetizers range from crab cakes to eggplant. For a savory meat dish, try the bone-in pork chop, grilled, French cut with Bing cherry brandy sauce. Or, for something a little different, try the salsa avocado chicken melt with provolone cheese. Desserts include strawberry tiramisu, bread pudding and cakes.

“Even though I’m the back of the house, I still realize what my part is,” says Spencer. “If I don’t do my job well, then it’s not going to be the experience people want, so I take pride in that.”

Otto’s

A French flair to comfort food? Yes, indeed. Owner Paul Weckman and his wife Emily developed the menu based on the dishes Weckman grew up on in Kentucky and added French techniques and flavors. The baked brie topped with raspberry coulis and candied pecans sets the tone for an elegant evening. The pork tenderloin is seared and served with a goat cheese stuffed apple and asparagus with a brandy reduction. It’s a menu you really have to see for yourself.

Tousey House Tavern

Southern hospitality and cuisine make the Tousey House a natural place to celebrate. Fresh fish, steaks and chicken are great choices if the glazed French-cut pork chop grilled with a raspberry-ancho chili glaze doesn’t capture your fancy.
