Jump and Jive to Music Under the Stars

Grab the kids and the picnic blanket for a summer treat — the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra’s free performances at the Devou Park Band Shell.

From vaudeville to disco, the 18th season of the park concerts is upon us. Be one of the 20,000 people every summer who enjoy music under the stars.

The KSO’s Newport Ragtime Band performs Aug. 4 and the 21-piece KSO Boogie Band Sept. 1. Concerts start at 7:30 p.m.

The diversity of vaudeville is the theme for the ragtime concert.

“The focus is on all these little genres of music that were being born at the turn of the last century,” says KSO Music Director J.R. Cassidy. “As always, we think people will be entertained and learn something as well.”

It includes selections popularized by the likes of Fats Waller, Jelly Roll Morton, Al Jolson, Cab Calloway and Artie Matthews. There will even be a silent film short and an audience sing-a-long (provide your own bouncing beach ball).

The Boogie Band performs rock, pop and soul from the 70s and 80s, including selections from the late Donna Summer and Whitney Houston.A
