As people get older, it can become more difficult to be as social or active as they were before. Just because you’re retired doesn’t mean that you can no longer go out to meet new people. If you’re looking to meet other seniors, there are many programs in the area that offer opportunities for recreation and socializing.

The Senior Services of Northern Kentucky is more than aware of this.

“Seniors are the most likely segment of society to become isolated. As they age, they lose the ability to drive, they are likely to grow distant from family and friends, they find it more difficult to leave their homes on their own,” says Charles Brewer, communication officer for SSNK. ”The Senior Services of Northern Kentucky’s mission is to keep seniors active and happy in their homes. The senior centers are an important part of that; they help the seniors get proper nutrition, exercise and socialization.”

In order to provide this service for the seniors in the area, SSNK operates 10 senior centers in Northern Kentucky.

“They allow the seniors to build networks of friends that act as support systems,” says Brewer. “Most of our centers provide transportation; the SSNK Senior Transportation program also helps seniors visit the centers.”

The centers are also full of activities. The Florence Senior Activity Center, for example, has a full schedule of events every day for its 1,000 regularly attending members. You can take Zumba, line dancing, tai chi, yoga classes and art lessons or play Mah Jong. In addition, the center has daily activities like its walking club and cornhole.

At other centers, it’s common to see seniors practicing light exercise, participating in Wii bowling or playing euchre.

“In [the 2013 fiscal year], our centers served 2,072 members,” says Brewer. “We saw a big increase in clients; about 1,000 more regularly attending members.”

Northern Kentucky holds many events that allow seniors to play, like the Northern Kentucky Senior Games. Anyone over 50 can compete in a week of light athletic events during the month of May. Running May 12-21 this year, events will be held in cities across Northern Kentucky. You can find out more information at ftthomas.org.

Retirement communities also offers activities for people who need additional level of care.

Rosedale Green in Covington keeps seniors happy with games (like Let’s Make A Deal), classes (like woodworking) and outings. Madonna Manor in Villa Hills hosts movie nights and parties. And the Elmcroft of Florence has residents play volleyball or enjoy their own Happy Hour.

Many communities keep their activity calendars online, so potential residents can get an idea of what’s available while selecting their future home.

All of these organizations want seniors to know they can still have fun. Luckily, Northern Kentucky has the services and retirement communities that can ensure just that.
