Options are Plentiful
Right Care, Right Place is Best Bet for Seniors Looking for a Change

Nobody likes to have life disrupted. That holds especially true for baby boomers and those coping with necessary adjustments to getting older.

But like it or not, the number of people between the ages of 65 and 84 will increase by almost 40 percent between 2010 and 2020, according to Uncle Sam.

With that will come health and lifestyle complications that may sometimes call for changes in housing and care.

Today’s retirement communities are gearing up to meet those needs, offering several levels of senior care that can be customized to an individual’s needs.

Experts say recognizing the need for care is a major decision. Determining the level of care or making the decision to leave home for a facility are critical. The secret to keeping everyone happy and safe is finding the right care, whether it is in-home or a a facility.

.To find the right spot, it’s important to know what the options are:

Independent living: Communities with apartments, condominiums or detached units offer a social setting and a broad range of recreational activities and services geared to active older adults who want to live in a community with their peers and not worry about maintaining a home. These are often combined with assisted living facilities.

Assisted living: Residential home-like settings with a range of social activities and transportation for those who want some help with daily care and need a watchful eye. Various sized units may include studios and apartments with kitchenettes. Meal plans are available. Residents are checked on but have more freedom and independence, and must be able to get around on their own, even if they require walkers or wheelchairs. In Kentucky, assisted living communities are required to provide each client with a separate unit that includes a lockable door and private bathroom. Assistance can include help with bathing, dressing, eating and self-administered medication.

Nursing: Residents require 24-hour monitoring and hands-on care. Patients usually need assistance for bathing, dressing and eating. Services often include rehabilitation and skilled nursing care.

Continuing care retirement: These communities include different levels of care from independent living to assisted living and nursing care. Residents can move from one level of care to the next as the need increases. Facilities often include apartments, condos and nursing quarters.
